Minor Cold, 23rd solar term of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, falls on Jan 5, marking bitter cold stage of winter. On this day, people treat themselves with snacks and tea, and birds start to nest facing the sun. Steaming glutinous rice is a tradition during Minor Cold in southern China, which carries people’s wishes that warmth will stay around the year.
