According to the eulogy, Pearl Sun Lin passed away peacefully on 24 March 2025, at the grand age of 103. She was born in Guangzhou, China on 16 January 1922 to Sun Fo, the city’s mayor and Chen Sukying. She grew up happily surrounded by the love and companionship of her three siblings – brothers Sun Tse Ping, Sun Tse Kiong and sister Rose Sun Tchang who are all deceased – and many cousins.

The family spent time between Guangzhou and Shanghai due to political turmoil and to avoid a deadly typhoid epidemic. They evacuated to Chongqing and again to Hong Kong as the Japanese invasion approached Shanghai. Her father was a diplomat during her teenage years, which meant she traveled extensively around the world with her family, at times having to flee at a moment's notice to avoid the dangers of war. She attended schools in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Paris. She accompanied her father to Moscow during one of his missions to seek armaments to continue fighting the war.

In 1941 Pearl came to the United States to attend Mills College in Oakland, California. She traveled alone from Hong Kong for ten days, island hopping across the Pacific to Honolulu, Hawaii on a seaplane called the China Clipper, then continued by ship to San Francisco, California. When her sister Rose came to the U.S. to attend high school in Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1943, Pearl transferred to Wellesley College. She graduated in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

World War II ended that same year, and the United Nations was established. It was an exciting time of hopeful euphoria. Pearl was in Times Square in New York City on 12 January 1946, for the spectacular victory parade. Her first job was working for the Chinese Delegation to the U.N. as a secretary to one of the delegates – translating, writing, attending meetings and taking notes.

Pearl also met Andrew Lin in 1946 when she was maid of honor, and he was best man in his older brother’s wedding. They married in Shanghai in 1947 and returned to New York to work and start a family. They had two children by the time Andy took a job transfer to San José, California in 1956.

After their kids had grown, Pearl pursued additional education and worked as a medical librarian at a local hospital. She turned to teaching English as a second language for the school district when there was an influx of Chinese speaking immigrants from several Asian countries. She was fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, Shanghainese and English, which made her a valuable resource. Pearl was also a co-founder of the Soong Ching Ling Foundation in the U.S.A. Pearl was married for 66 years, until Andy’s death in 2013.

Besides her love and devotion to family and friends, her interests included health, nutrition, nature, investing, news and world events. To her, the honor of being Sun Yat-sen's granddaughter was in knowing that he was a good person who worked tirelessly and selflessly for China and the Chinese people. She admired and defended Sun Yat-sen’s humility in voluntarily stepping down from President of China in the higher interest of preserving the unity of the country, and his challenging patriarchy in favor of women’s equality and empowerment. She cared deeply about the people of the world, and the importance of keeping cultural heritage alive to foster greater understanding across generations and borders.

Pearl and her sister Rose Sun Tchang were both very concerned about the development of their hometown, Zhongshan. They returned to China many times to visit their relatives and donated a large number of cultural relics. In June 2016, they were both awarded the title of “Outstanding Contributor to the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Guangdong 2016” by the Guangdong Foundation For Cultural Heritage Conservation.  In November of the same year, they were each named “Honorary Citizen of Zhongshan City” by the Zhongshan Municipal Government. In October 2018, they were further named as “Outstanding Individuals of the 10th <Passing on the Torch – Cultural Heritage Dream Builders>” by the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

Pearl had a close and loving relationship with Soong Ching Ling, who was more like a second mother to her than a step grandmother. In a letter she wrote to Soong Ching Ling on 25 October 1949, Pearl expressed her desire to return to China to do what she could for the motherland and the people, in whatever way. She returned to China often since then, visiting Soong Ching Ling and rushed to be by her side in her final hours.

Pearl is most admired for her humble nature, kindness, integrity, compassion and charity. Her insatiable curiosity and sense of wonder about the world were key to her happy, healthy longevity, inspiring all who knew her. Pearl was a beautiful and gentle soul whose luster will continue to shine in our hearts forever.
